LOOK AND
DRAW

A drawing competition in Mallorca's museums, for young people aged 3 to 18

Take some paper and pencils, go to a museum, choose anything you see and draw it.

Few of us look at anything for long. We see something, we think we know what it is, and we move on, our attention already on what comes next.

Drawing is what stops that. You cannot draw a thing without looking at it properly.

Dionís Bennàssar spent his life looking at Mallorca: its people, its land, its sea, its traditions. He painted nothing that others could not see. He painted what everyone saw and few looked at.

Our museums are full of the wonders of the island's people and land. Quiet and free to enter, they are the perfect place to look, and to draw.

This is an invitation to sit for half an hour with a pencil, and find out what is really there.

How to take part

  1. Bring whatever you need to draw with. Paper A3 or smaller.
  2. Draw inside the museum, not at home, and without help from an adult.
  3. Ask for an entry slip at the desk, fill it in and stick it to the back of your drawing. Write your name on the back too.
  4. Leave the drawing in the folder.

You can enter as many drawings as you like. Each entrant can win one prize.

Questions

Do I have to bring my own materials?

Yes. The museums do not provide paper or pencils. Paper A3 or smaller.

Can I draw at home and bring it in?

No. The drawing has to be made inside the museum, in front of the thing you are drawing. That is the whole point of it.

Does it cost anything to enter?

No. Entry is free and this year's museums are free to get into.

What can I draw?

Anything on display. An object in a case, a tool, a piece of furniture, a painting, the building itself.

How many drawings can I enter?

As many as you like. Each entrant, though, can only win one prize.

I am not very good at drawing.

Almost nobody was at the start, including the painter this museum is named after. The panel looks at how carefully you observed something, not whether the drawing is perfect.

Do I have to live in Mallorca?

No. Anyone aged 3 to 18 can enter, including visitors.

Can I enter on my own?

Yes. If you are 14 or over you can fill in and sign the entry slip yourself. If you are younger, a parent, legal guardian or your teacher has to sign it. Each museum has its own rules about unaccompanied visits, so check before you go.

Can my class come?

Yes, and schools are very welcome. Write to info@fdionis.org and we will help you arrange it.

What happens to my child's details?

The slip asks for a contact so we can tell the winners they have won. The details are used for the competition only and are passed to nobody. There is a tick box authorising the drawing to be exhibited and photographed and the name published. If you leave it unticked the drawing is judged exactly the same and can still win, it simply is not shown publicly. The full detail is under Data protection.

Why a competition?

Judging art is an uncomfortable idea, and it ought to be. No drawing is better than another in any sense that truly matters, and no result here is a verdict on anyone's ability.

But prizes, and recognition from people who have spent their lives looking at art, are as old as the idea of being an artist. Being taken seriously by people who specialise in the art of looking has encouraged artists for centuries, and still does. That is why there are prizes, and it is the only reason.

What the panel looks at is attention. How carefully you observed the thing in front of you, and how honestly you put it on paper. Not neatness, and not whether it resembles a photograph.

Everyone who takes part has already done the part that counts: sitting in a museum and looking hard at something for half an hour.

Prizes are for a few. Looking and drawing is for everyone.

For schools

A visit works well in a single session. Pupils need paper, pencils, somewhere to sit and about an hour. We arrange the dates with the museum, and on the day of the visit you collect the entry slips at the desk and hand them out to the group.

Write to info@fdionis.org.

For museums

Mira i Dibuixa is open to any museum in Mallorca with a permanent collection on display.

If your museum would like to take part, write to info@fdionis.org.

Data protection

Who holds the data

Fundació Dionís Bennàssar, NIF G07966807, Carrer de la Roca 14, 07460 Pollença, Mallorca. You can contact us at info@fdionis.org.

What we ask for

Name and surnames, date of birth, school (optional), a phone number or email address, and the drawing. The date of birth is used to assign the age category and to establish whether an adult signature is needed. We ask for nothing else, and for no special category data.

What we use it for

To run the competition: registering entries, organising the judging panel, telling the winners, issuing certificates and prizes and mounting the exhibition. If you tick the box on the entry slip, also to exhibit and photograph the drawing and to publish the entrant's name in publicity for the competition.

On what legal basis

Consent, under article 6.1.a of the General Data Protection Regulation. Anyone aged 14 or over may consent for themselves; below that age the slip must be signed by a parent, legal guardian or the teacher accompanying the group, as set out in article 7 of Spain's Ley Orgánica 3/2018. Consent can be withdrawn at any time by writing to info@fdionis.org, without affecting processing carried out beforehand.

If you leave the box unticked

The drawing is judged in exactly the same way and can still win. It simply is not exhibited, not photographed and the name is not published.

Who else sees it

Nobody. We do not pass the data to third parties and we do not transfer it outside the European Union. Participating museums keep the drawings at their desk until we collect them, but hold no copy and record nothing from the entry slips.

How long we keep it

Until 31 December 2027. After that the entry slips are destroyed. Drawings that are not selected are not returned and are destroyed after the exhibition, so take a photograph of yours before leaving it if you want to keep it.

Photographs at the prize-giving

Photographs are taken at the event on 18 May 2027 for publicity for the competition. If you would rather not appear in them, tell our staff on the day.

Your rights

You can request access to your data, correct it, have it deleted, restrict or object to its processing and request its portability, by writing to info@fdionis.org. If you believe we have not handled your request properly, you can complain to the Spanish Data Protection Agency, aepd.es.
