Joan March Torrandell: “desde l’envés” — A Solo Exhibition
Self-taught artist Joan March Torrandell presents his new solo exhibition titled “desde l’envés” at the Fundació Dionís Bennàssar, located at Carrer de la Roca, 14, Pollença. The exhibition opens officially on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 7:00 PM, showcasing a distinctly pictorial body of work accompanied by complementary multidisciplinary formats that reflect his professional evolution. The exhibition documents the artistic development of a creator historically connected to northern Mallorca.
Artistic Background and Creative Evolution
Joan March Torrandell was born in Pollença in 1958 and began painting regularly at age twelve, entirely self-taught. At fifteen, he received a special honourable mention at the International Painting Competition of Pollença for his work Fiesta en el puerto, an oil on canvas measuring 130×162 centimetres (1973). He held his first solo exhibition at sixteen, subsequently studying drawing and printmaking at the School of Arts and Crafts in Palma de Mallorca. During this period, he apprenticed at Galería Norai, participating in group exhibitions alongside artists including Manolo Monpó, Jaume Plensa, Rafael Amengual, Margaret Stark, Tomeu Ventayol, Don Armstrong, Martí Royo, and José Morea.
From age twenty, March has dedicated himself exclusively to professional artistic practice. While his work centres primarily on painting, he draws regularly and has occasionally undertaken printmaking, illustration, sculpture, installation, and portraiture across more than five decades of artistic activity.
Professional Trajectory
Joan March Torrandell’s extensive career includes distinguished solo exhibitions in Mallorca and abroad, such as La Pell Girada (The Turned Skin) at the Church of the Convent of Pollença (2008), Nòmades Traginant el Seu Jardí (Nomads Dragging Their Garden) at Galería Lluc Fluxà, Palma (2015), and Esplet at Sala Central de Muro (2017). He has also exhibited individually at venues including Casal Solleric (2000), Espai Mallorca in Barcelona (2000), Can Fondo in Alcúdia (2005), and Galería Dionís Bennàssar in Madrid (2005).
In illustration, March has collaborated on editorial projects including the short story collection El Tendedero by María José Pérez Ruiz, the volume Llegendes de les Balears (Legends of the Balearic Islands) published by El Gall editor, and drawings for the UNESCO campaign Serra de Tramuntana, Patrimonio de la Humanidad (Tramuntana Range, World Heritage). His pictorial work has received First Prize at the I Manacor City Painting Competition (1994), the Palma City Prize Antoni Gelabert (1999), and First Prize at the Capdepera Competition (1998).
